Almost half the people who bought a leasehold house in the past decade had no idea what they were getting into, according to a new study.

Leasehold house owners are often charged expensive ground rents along with expensive fees just to make changes to their homes such as a change to kitchen units, replacing the flooring or installing double glazing.

The Government has already announced measures that include a ban on leaseholds for almost all new-build houses, however, this doesn't help those already stuck with a leasehold house.

You may not know but leaseholders do have a legal right under the Leasehold Reform Act 1967 to buy the freehold of their house if they meet certain qualifying criteria. Alternatively, it is possible to negotiate with the freeholder informally to buy the freehold by agreement.
